Recurring task and tickler

I am using 1.7-devel and generally it works great (once I *finally* sorted out how to get apache to talk with tracks). One new feature that I like is the option for recurring tasks. My only problem is that no matter how I set up the recurring task it shows up under my “Home” tab and the relevant “Context” tab.

There are two options:
- the date that the todo is due. Show the todo X days before the todo is due (0=show always)
- the date todo comes from tickler (no due date set)

If I set the first to zero it shows up, but if I put in a number like 2 it still shows up. To be honest I am not quite sure I understand what the second option is supposed to do, but selecting that does not change the fact that the action shows up. Any suggestions for how to fix that?

if you set a due date and set X to 2, the action should be put in the tickler and should be hidden from the home page / context page (unless the due date minus X is before today grin ). Actually it just sets both due date and the show from date as you are used from the normal add-action dialog

I guess the label should be improved, you’re not the first who finds it difficult to understand.

If you see different behavior, please make a bug report at http://dev.rousette.org.uk

(btw, when you say 1.7-devel, are you actually using the latest git clone? )

I am using the version pulled from git about 5 or 6 days ago (git clone git://github.com/bsag/tracks.git). Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the same error, but something is definitely wrong with the recurring tasks, so I have added ticket #754. The “start on” and the calendar are not very friendly to each other wink and tickler seems to ignore any changes done under the recurring action tab.

Update: I think a big part of the problem is that any updates I make on the recurring actions are not translated into changes anywhere else. Say I initially write an action where the 0 day option is used (show always). If I try to change that to say show 2 days before due the action will still show up on the home / context pages and not under tickler. That is probably why I got the behaviour mentioned above. It will revert to expected behaviour if I click done (i.e. show up under tickler with the correct amount of days).

Furthermore: when I delete an action under recurring tasks it still shows up under tickler (forgot to put that in the ticket).

I see that currently recurring tasks are not intuitive. When you define a recurring action, actually you’re defining a recurring pattern from which normal tasks are created. So when you edit a recurring task, you’re not editing the already created tasks that are in tickler/context/home, but you’re editing the pattern. This is why the change is not reflected anywhere else.

In this case you need to edit both :-(

I guess this needs some improvements…

I just want to say how much tracks has grown on me the past few months. Great project. I just have a tiny question.

So if I want to set ‘show from’ to the same day, what would I do? I mean, 0 shows always, and 1 shows it the day before.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

in 1.7, you cannot do this. We fixed this in the upcoming 1.8 were 0 means show on the due day.

Oh, one more thing. There’s this quirk where if I want to create a new recurring task, the field for ‘Ends on’ holds a default value like so ‘2009-08-11 21:00:00’.

For a while I kept trying to understand why I couldn’t create any more recurring tasks…even though I didn’t have the Ends on radio button selected. Finally after clearing that field, it worked. But of course, for every new task thereafter I have to clear that field.

Just wanted to let you know.

Thank you.

I’m still not sure what the second option does.

” the date todo comes from tickler (no due date set)”

Yes, I would recommend that when a recurring action is edited, the existing “instances” also be updated to reflect any changes (probably hard to program that!).

Also: with a yearly frequency, it would be handy to add an interval, like “every x years”.  Otherwise, to set a task for every 3 years, for example, I have to set a monthly frequency and use 36 as the interval.

you can set a date as a due date or as a show from date. The latter (= second option) means the todo remains in the tickler until the given date.

When selecting the first (due date) you can set the number of days before the due date that the todo should come from the tickler
