I followed Frederik’s instructions this past weekend and instaleld Tracks 1.043 on Dreamhost without any trouble.  Speed on DH was a little slow this past weekend, but today it seems much improved, for whatever reason.

Take a look at http://www.getontracks.org/wiki/Dreamhost/ - it worked for me.

Arik,

Were you able to get the Email to Tracks feature to work with Dreamhost?

If so, how did you do it. Im a little confused.

Uh… I didn’t know about this feature until you mentioned it right now.

I didn’t try.

I got the email integration going.. it took me a while to figure it out, mostly because I couldn’t find the instructions for it here.  (I must be having a brain fade….)

Anyway.  In order to do this, you need an email account that is local to the same server your tracks installation is on.  That way the emails you send can be handed off to the appropriate script in your tracks directory.  This is sort of tricky on Dreamhost, because you cannot accomplish this by setting up an “email account” on your Dreamhost Panel.    This is because Dreamhost runs mail and web services on different machines.

You can, however, set up a shell account that will have an email—let’s say “tracks” is the shell account.  Then the email address you need to send to will be .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).  (The “server” depends on what server Dreamhost has your account on.  It should show on your hosting information on the panel.)  Notice that you are not actually using your own domain in the email address!

OK that was probably more complicated than it needed to be! The rest is easier, as long as you know the path to your tracks installation.

Log in to your shell account that you just created.  Use your favorite text editor to create a file in the home directory named .forward.postfix

The file will contain one line:

“|/usr/bin/ruby /home/webuser/tracks.yourdomain.net/tracks/script/runner -e production ‘MessageGateway.receive(STDIN.read)’”

Be sure to include the double quotes ” and single quotes ’ as indicated.  You should replace “/home/webuser/tracks.yourdomain.net/tracks” with the path to your tracks install.  This is what mine looks like (substituting my real user & domain info), but yours may be different if you’ve changed Dreamhost’s defaults.

Save your file, be sure to set your default context and email address, and send a test message!

ETA: a couple optional notes for the unixly-inclined:

Note that the home directory for the shell account you created is not the same as the home directory where Dreamhost puts your web root directories by default.  However, you should be OK if you haven’t done any customizing of group access.  Both user ids will, by default, be in the same group, and the directories will have rx mode set for members of that same group.  If you have done something else on your own, you’ll need to make sure that the shell account you use to receive your tracks emails is in a group that can get to the tracks files.

Also, if you do a pwd in your home directory, you will get something like /home/.asdf/username.  According to the Dreamhost Wiki, you should ignore the middle part and just refer to it as /home/username.

Could you kindly add these instructions to the wiki page?
